Health-promoting gut bacterium Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Eubacterium rectale may reduce exhaustion in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), according to research led by Brent L. Williams, epidemiologist at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, as reported in the February 21, 2023 issue of the Scientist. These “good” bacteria are known to produce butyrate, a fatty acid that breaks down fiber.

The abundance of bacterial genes in the gut of CFS cases were compared with those of 91 healthy subjects to determine their gut microbiome differences. The study offers new insights that link the condition’s unexplained in fatigue symptoms with changes in gut microbe composition.
