Vitamin C has shown to increase the abundance Bifidobacterium and affected various species, according to a December 08, 2022 issue of Future Medicine (1).
Bifidobacteria is a beneficial bacteria in our gut that prevents inflammation and protects us from many diseases, including colorectal cancer, various infections (of the intestines) and diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis), and depression, according to Atlas Biomed (2).
Researchers tracked 23 individuals who took vitamin C, as prescribed by their doctors. Results showed that vitamin C increased levels of the gut bacterium called Bifidobacterium. The study was led by co-author Dr. Sabine Hazan, CEO of Progenabiome and Herbsprout.com Advisory Board member.
Low vitamin C concentrations have even been associated with cognitively impairment, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, according to the Future Medicine report (1).
